Downloadable music is offered in several different formats. First, read about the formats below. Then click the category you want above. Make sure you buy the proper format. Purchases are non-refundable. Downloadable CD formats: - MP3 (192 kbps): Most non-iPod users should choose this. The MP3 format encoded at 192 kilobits per second. This is a very high-quality file (most MP3s are 128 or less). It works on any music player (including iPod).
- MPEG4/AAC (192 kbps): Most iPod owners should choose this. This is the same file format as the iTunes store, but better quality. (iTunes "normal" quality is 128 kbps.)
- MPEG4/AAC (256 kbps): Purist iPod owners should choose this. This is the same format and quality as iTunes "high quality." It costs slightly more than MPEG4/AAC 192 and will take up more space on your computer or portable music player.
- Ogg Vorbis (quality 6): Open Source enthusiasts should choose this. The Ogg Vorbis format at quality level 6 (very high quality). The same price and roughly the same file size as AAC or MP3 192. It exists because MP3 and AAC are proprietary, patented formats that require licensing fees and can be changed at will by their creators. The Ogg Vorbis format is like Linux or other Open Source software; no corporation controls it. However, it will not work on all players. If you're not sure, don't choose this.
- FLAC: Serious music purists and archivists should choose this. It costs more, and the files are about 4 times larger than AAC or MP3 at 192. FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Coding. All the other formats are "lossy," which means that the encoding discards a significant amount of data to get files sizes down. FLAC is lossless: every bit of the data on the physical CD is here. FLAC is also Open Source, unlike Apple Lossless, which is proprietary and patented. FLAC will not play on most portable players. Most FLAC customers will archive the FLAC files and create their own smaller encoded files for playing. If you're not sure, don't choose this.
